Hearthside

Hearthside is an installation of a new body of work by British-Bengali artist Mohammed Z. Rahman, presented over six days, in collaboration with Oitij-jo, meditating on hospitality, food knowledge, ecosystems and the emotional power of the dinner table to foster solidarities.

Interpreting embodied culinary knowledge, reflections on food supply chains, and teeming moments of community, Rahman communicates their alchemical, magically alive gastronomical universe through paint, sculpture, and installation.

9 Sep 2025 – 14 Sep 2025

This exhibition will be closed to the general public from 5pm on Thu 11 September as we will be hosting an in-conversation event with Mohammed Z. Rahman within the exhibition space.

arms blue, knees bare

arms blue, knees bare is a multi-media exhibition by artist Puer Deorum in collaboration with Oitij-jo, bringing together and complicating narratives around memory, archives, and intimacy.

Comprised of performance, sculptural installation, and 35mm film photography from their personal archive between 2016-2024, in arms blue, knees bare Puer Deorum plays on ideas of object (im)permanence and opacity.

Strung together within the former central reading room of the Whitechapel Library, they unfold the idea of a live object, considering alternative methods of archiving, storing memories, and (re)collecting intimacy through physicality, impressions and material choices.

Make it stand out

Join us for a day-long exhibition by artist Laisul Hoque in collaboration with Oitij-jo, mediating on the multiplicity of the Bangladeshi and British Bengali experience through the lens of diasporic food cultures, hybridity and tradition, and kinship.

During the day, visitors are invited to interact with Hoque’s latest sculptural installation, which features an antique sodium-lit “Bangladeshi sweet shop” display counter. The counter offers two ingredients visitors can use to recreate the artist’s father’s favourite snack: fried chickpea flour balls soaked in sugar syrup and seasoned fried gram flour flakes.

This interactive installation, titled An Ode to All the Flavours, is rooted in the artist’s earliest emotive memory of paternal love.
