Hajira confesses: “When I first moved here I wasn’t allowed to go out. It’s called Bangla Town, but it’s never been a place that Bengali women go to.” Marzia agrees: “Brick Lane, at least for my generation, is perceived as a male dominated area, it’s not a place I feel comfortable visiting even with my girlfriends.”

Our initiative has given participants a range of new skills and a major confidence boost. The initial workshops in April 2019 attracted over 50 attendees. Today there is a core group of 12 members aged between 30 – 60, some of whom had never worked before. Many participants felt that, although Brick Lane has become known as ‘Bangla Town’, it’s a place dominated by men. Through TATI, the women are now part of a space that, historically, they have been excluded from.

In 2019, Anjum started holding workshops with women in east London to test recipes. Later that year, 16 women signed up for courses in cookery, catering and food safety. They talked about reimagining Brick Lane — at one point home to 50 Bangladeshi restaurants, all managed by men — with authentic Bengali dishes such as kitchuri, a rice and lentil dish that inspired kedgeree. “We wanted to present the real Bangladeshi people,” Anjum says. “That meant people who were not visible: women.”
